Hike Pacing Worksheet

Estimate moving and planned stop time from your own pace assumption.

Not a turnaround-time or safety guarantee. Use official route information, current conditions, conservative daylight margins, and group-specific judgment.

What this result means

The worksheet divides distance by your assumed moving speed and adds planned stop time. It does not account automatically for elevation, surface, navigation, weather, or group variation. The result is intentionally labeled as an estimate because a number can be mathematically correct while the input, unit, rule, product, or real-world application is wrong. Keep the entries with the result so another person can reproduce it.

How to use the calculator

  1. Read every label and unit before entering a value.
  2. Measure the final item, area, time window, or inventory—not a memory of it.
  3. Enter the values and save a screenshot or written note of the assumptions.
  4. Compare the result with the controlling current source.
  5. Add a practical buffer only when the method and situation support one.

Worked example

A five-mile route can take far longer than arithmetic suggests when elevation, heat, route-finding, children, wildlife, or poor footing are present. Change one value at a time to see which assumption has the greatest effect. Do not round until the end unless the current rule says otherwise.

Before relying on the estimate

Check Why it matters
Units and final dimensions A correct formula with mixed or preliminary units gives the wrong plan.
Current source or label Rules, limits, instructions, and conditions can change.
Small real-world test Fit, material, behavior, weather, access, or handling may differ from the model.
Stop condition Know when to revise, pause, or seek qualified help.
Important: Not a turnaround-time or safety guarantee. Use official route information, current conditions, conservative daylight margins, and group-specific judgment.
